New partnership has been formed to establish Blue Economy and Blue Carbon Methodologies

CEMarin has established a valuable collaboration with Cercarbono and Kitaran Tabah. The objective is to promote and ensure the development of methodologies based on scientific principles for blue carbon and blue economy projects.

This collaboration took place on August 16, 2023, with the formalization of a Memorandum of Understanding signed by representatives from each organization during the VI Mangrove Macrobenthos Management Meeting – the world‘s most important congress about mangroves.

This strategic alliance between CEMarin, Cercarbono and Kitaran Tabah seeks to promote and develop methodologies and projects based on scientific principles of blue carbon and the blue economy, including mangrove, salt marsh and seagrass ecosystems. This collaborative effort will benefit the work that each of the parties is carrying out in the carbon sector and the field of marine research. Additionally, joint capacity-building and knowledge transfer will enhance practices in carbon offset, technology and environmental assets. In this context, fundamental objectives are proposed, which include the expansion of blue carbon offset and sustainable development activities within the framework of the blue economy.

Our CEMarin Executive Director, Dr. Andrés Fernando Osorio, is excited about this  partnership and emphasizes that “while mangroves are the most efficient natural carbon offset, they are also highly complex. The collaboration’s main focus is to ensure that blue carbon and blue economy projects, along with their applied methodology, remain rooted in sound scientific principles, fulfilling global community expectations and commitments to our planet.”

The CEO of Cercarbono, Alex Saer, mentions “this partnership aims to ensure that blue carbon and blue economy projects not only demonstrate efficiency but also establish a reliable and sustainable foundation for long-term scrutiny.”

Norita Ja’afar, founder and partner of Kitaran Tabah, said: “global buyers of carbon offsets are looking to mangroves and seagrasses to become valuable carbon offset assets, especially in equatorial areas. A new methodology will generate significant environmental benefits by turning forests into huge carbon-absorbing green lungs. This will generate significant long-term income for the owners, stakeholders and the community of the environmental assets.”

At CEMarin, we are highly pleased with the valuable collaboration established with these leading organizations in the field of blue carbon and blue economy.  This initiative fills us with optimism regarding the positive impact that we can achieve together for the benefit of our planet.
