Whale watching in the Integrated Regional Management District of the Gulf of Tribugá – Cabo Corrientes (DRMI GT-CC) has progressively increased but remains unregulated, raising concerns about its impact on marine mammals, especially humpback whales that visit the region annually to breed and nurse their calves.

Our priority is to strengthen local governance to promote Community-Based and Sustainable Whale Watching in the Gulf of Tribugá by key stakeholders, using a comprehensive approach that encompasses sociocultural, economic, and ecological dimensions.

Fieldwork

Between July 3 and 15, 2024, the first field trip of the project Community and Sustainable Whale Watching in the Gulf of Tribugá was conducted under the coordination of the National University of Colombia and the Corporation Center of Excellence in Marine Sciences — CEMarin.

Various co-creative activities were held in Nuquí, Termales, Partadó, Arusí, Joví, Coquí, and Panguí, which included identifying key stakeholders in whale watching in the Gulf as well as sharing community perceptions regarding the practices of observing these marine mammals.

A total of 142 people participated in the workshops, meetings, and interviews, including leaders of community councils, boat operators, guides, local lodge owners, and women’s collectives.
